Wk9 Social Media Marketing Careers

Greetings Social Media Marketers

I hope that everyone is doing great! As we wind down the class I wanted to talk a little bit about the job opportunities available in the realm of social media marketing.  As you’ve learned there is a lot that falls under social media marketing and there are a lot of new specialties for job opportunities that fall under the category of professional social media marketing. Here are a few prominent ones:

1.       SEO specialization: we only briefly introduced to this, but as I think you have been able to see, there is a heavily strategic (in some ways mathematical) elements to this job.  SEO is not exclusive to social media marketing, but actually encompasses all internet marketing, especially websites.  If you are in an IT related major, you might be interested in SEO specialization.

2.       Online Advertising:  Online advertising now includes paid advertising on social media sites including Facebook and Youtube.  If you are interested in advertising, you might be interested in specializing in online and social media advertising.

3.       Public Relations (PR) Social Media Manager:  This type of specialty focuses on branding and reputation management, working on ensuring that the company/celebrity look their best on social media sites.  Many celebrity accounts are managed by public relations social media managers.  Keep in mind a big part of this job is doing “damage control” minimizing negative publicity.

4.       Content Specialist: this role requires strong writing skills.  If you are in a communications or some type of writing major, you might be interested in this specialty.

5.       Subject-matter Expert:  Do you have a very specific technical specialty?  -Could be science, engineering, sports, law, politics almost any subject really, that is deemed relevant to the public, and that you have extensive experience in or special insight into.

6.       General SM Manager:  As you can imagine a general social media specialist (depending on the size of the company might be called a SM coordinator, specialist, or manager) works in all these areas of social media.  This is an exciting role, depending on the scope of the brand/company, the biggest challenge is that person is spread very thin.

In addition to these professional marketing roles, there are also many opportunities for nonpaid, freelance, and contract Blogging, Moderating, and “Influencer” roles.  Since so many of these social media marketing positions are highly desirable, many professionals get their start by getting experience in these areas.

So, class, I’d love to hear from you…
A)      Are you interested in pursuing career opportunities in social media marketing?  Which of the above roles interests you and why?
B)      If not, what area of marketing are you interested in?  (Sales, Logistics, PR, Advertising, Brand Management, Retail)-Why?
C)      If you are not interested in pursuing marketing at all, tell me how understanding the principles of marketing can still help you in your profession and in building your own personal credibility?

  4. I was just a student interested in the whole marketing area itself, but throughout the class my interest in social media became bigger and bigger! So, I think it would be great if I work as a general social media manager. It is not that specific yet, but I am sure that the things I learned from this class can be helpful in any place later in the future. Thank you, Dr. Guignard :)

  7. Hello everyone!

Our courses are coming to an end soon and after a lot of thought I think I have found the field in which I would like to apply in SMM: I'd like to become a Social Media Manager Specialist!

    Let me tell you why!
The days when it was enough to know how to program tweets in advance and search on Twitter based on hashtags is over. Today, I think that the social media manager specialist needs to know what works and what does not work on social media, with a perfect understanding of the different channels and a complete toolkit to analyze the data.

Thank you for asking this very important question for our future career

  8. If I had to choose one of those I would either persue into a SEO specialization but I'm also interested by the "General SM Manager". My future is never-ending discussion with myself and it is still hard to figure out what I really want to do as which I could have 7 different lives to live all my dreams.
I may also continue in the artisitc field and become a designer, UI-UX or a logo designer.
But many opportunities here make me want to apply for an MBA with a marketing (digital) concentration.

What else can I say? It is all blurry for the moment!! Please help me to choose :)

  9. I am still thinking about my future job between marketing psychology and criminal psychology, but even if I choose one between two I will always try to combine Social Media and my job. Actually, my major professors are using Social Media to interact with people. I think I can learn that.

  10. Hello,

I've enjoyed doing SMM during this class, so thanks a lot for that ! I won't do a career in SMM for sure, but I will be able to use what I learned from this class for my own purpose or who knows if one day I want to start my own business... But for now I'm just focusing on having a career in finance. I still keep in mind that SMM is fundamental because our future is digital.

    B) I am also interested in Advertising because it requires a lot of creativity and knowledge. It is an every day challenge to fin inspiration every where and when I see good advertising it is very satisfying. It inspires a lot.
C)It is very important to know how you can sell yourself or your product and how you make people interested in your work. It allows to create opportunities if we manage to do it well.

  16. In my opinion, I think marketing is an important skill to me. I think every business needs a marketing department. Social media marketing is the new trend of marketing. I might not find a job that's related to marketing. I am interested in branding. Building a strong and well-known brand is my goal. I will use my knowledge from this class to first build a professional business brand on LinkedIn. Then, I hope I can build my own brand in the future.

  17. Having worked for three years in Advertising, I know that Marketing is a field I wish to dedicate myself to!

I have attended courses specialized in SEO, centered on the strategic elements which can be applied to communications; have worked in Public Relations, a post where one of my prime tasks was working as the Social Media Manager; and during five years' in Online Advertising.

This course has offered me the opportunity to develop my knowledge and skills in these fields, and I very much look forward to applying all these lessons into developing my personal brand!

  18. Hello,

My main field is IT, I develop mobile application, create IoT solution for company and web application.
Even if this is not directly related to my field I will still use what I learn to handle my promotion on LinkedIn... Or if one day I want to start my own company, at the beginning I will have to do everything by myself, social media... I'm not really a marketing person so it was an opportunity for me to develop these skills.

    Thank you,
    Francois

  20. Hi! As an Econ Major, I'm very interested in a career in marketing. I feel that my major and marketing can go hand in hand, and General SM Manager interests me the most out of your career options. Other than that, I'm most interested in going into Sales and Logistics. In general though, marketing can be a very useful tool, as most businesses will need marketing on some level, and you can even market yourself.

  23. Hi ! I don't want to be specialized in Social Media Marketing but it is so important to know how it works ! Everyone can have some skills and knowledge about it because we're all using the tools (facebook, blogs, linkedin,..) ! the promotion, improvement of the business is mandatory, and almost impossible without SMM
