Wk8 SEO and Viral Marketing

Search Engine Optimization also called, SEO, is simply the strategic attempt to maximize the number of visitors to a particular website, profile, or post through efforts that the site/profile/post appears high on the list of results returned by a search engine.  Another term often used in conjunction is the notion of “viral” marketing which occurs when social media users themselves promote the website/profile/post which snowballs into many, many shares.  Viral posts are wonderful if the public is promoting you in a positive light, on the other hand it can be detrimental to a brand if the viral posts are negative.  The key to remember is that viral media is actually very rare.  It’s considered to be an “outlier” and can be difficult to predict, nearly impossible to manage, and is usually short-lived.  While many will claim that they know the “secret formula” for making content go viral, the reality is there is no one secret formula, but rather a combination of many factors much like a “perfect storm”.

Many argue that in most cases, sustainable online branding depends not on going viral, but rather strategic efforts to constantly optimize search engine results.

What do you think class?  Do you think it’s better use of your efforts and time to focus on steady search engine optimization through reliable tactics like using hashtags, using strategic search phrases, and practicing the science of timing, or is it better to focus on trying to go viral?  Why?

  1. Going viral brings instant popularity to a product or person. However, one has to consider whether the people who view a post that goes viral will remember it a week later. For purposes of marketing, I believe a steady following will work better in the long run. Regular followers are the ones who are likely to keep coming back and will probably share the the site and/or information to their network of friends and family. To be on the conservative side, I would prefer to gradually building a following versus going viral.

  2. The biggest problem of viral marketing is that it only has a temporary effect in contrast to the Search Engine Optimization. So, I think using SEO can be more beneficial in a long term point of view than rather concentrating on viral marketing. By using the algorithm of SEO and working hard on it, SEO's biggest advantage is that the page can last forever on the result unless the website disappears. Furthermore, it can help raise brand awareness. Also, I found that in business situations people use SEO because it can be helpful to increase ROI for medium and long term marketing goals.

  3. In my opinion, going viral can be a good strategy only to helps start your business. This situation is the best to spread your content on the Social Networks when you just start. Instead of this dreaming fact, you shouldn't keep focus on going Viral. If you want to grow and a sustainable business using SEO is a good idea. It can helps you prepare the futur.

  4. Here are two ways to grow the reach of our brand. Viral is a genius strike, you share a video (low cost or not at all) you don't even buy media share/space and just because of words to mouth the video/photo goes viral and all the users, consumer talk about it, share it, like it, generate traffic on your website and so on... But the main thing about viral content is that you can't predict it, therefore it is not a sustainable strategy. There is no guarantee, when you upload, that the content will be viral. Even if some people will proclame that they know the precise technic to go viral they will lie. In fact there are stimuli, fields, characteristics that helps a content to go viral it's known. If an ad is really emotional/sad or very funny it will most likely go viral. I would also say that nowadays we know that Facebook, Instagram and co are changing their algorithms and especially for companies the natural reach for each of their post is never more than 5%. All of this in order to encourage them to pay the promotion of their posts. If every posts were going viral, it would kill the economy of Social media.
When a video is viral there are always some few (at least) media spaces bought, either it's directly sponsored on facebook or brands will use digital media like Konbini, vice, etc. Nothing is REALLY viral, every time you'll see that the brand has to pay anyway.
Nevertheless build a "viral content" must always be the goal of all your publication, indeed trying to get close from what "viral content" are is the key to improve the reach of your posts. (that's why I added a good looking girl on my thumbnail post 2 weeks ago and it worked... (seriously).
I will suggest to get on the means and money on the most strategic part. The SEO. Indeed if a website is first page ranked in its domain of service the website will statistically get way more traffic, and this is math, statistics and code, there will be nothing to do with chance. The process is accessible to everyone, you just have to please Google algorithm.
On the long term a good SEO strategy will bring a solid permanent traffic on your brand, while a Viral content can fail or success, bringing you traffic one month and nothing the others and that's something most companies don't like, they need constant traffic and purchase from their customer and if the business only works once a year because of some lucky viral post then the company will die because without a solid background and a wide presence in media the viral campaign are all forgotten after a month.

  5. I think both ways has its great sides. So instead of using only one, I think its better to combine two strategies. However, in my opinion, we have to focus more to reliable tactics than SEO because SEO never lasts longer, but the output that we put our effort and time last longer. Also, as it piles up, it is more likely to people think our product is reliable.

  6. To me, it is better to focus on Search Engine Optimization to grow your business. It is very known that when people are looking for an information on internet they are clicking on the top of results and will not go on the second page. If your site is in the top of results, you have better chances to be known and to reach more people. Going viral is ephemeral, while SEO is a long term option. SEO needs studies to know when people are looking for your product, on which social media, but it's worth it. Trying to go viral is not a strategy, it's about finding the opportunity at the right moment and being relay by the right person.

  7. In my opinion, I'd rather go viral. Because viral marketing is an effective promotional tool for organizations, small agencies make it a formidable communication tool. Viral marketing at the source Web, which combines buzz, blogs or even small videos, manages to obtain excellent results in terms of audience without investing money in the purchase of space.

  8. To me, going viral is a good thing specially when you start your business, it gives you a great boost on visibility but you need to have solid bases, I mean you need to be ready to keep up with the new increase of demand, there is gonna be new and higher expectation from your brand. Since going viral is only temporary, you need to reinvent yourself, offer something new, better !

  9. Hi Class!

To my mind, I think that the Search Engine Optimization in order to grow your business is the most valuable thing!

The advertising is a very important part of the management of every type of company. You have to advertise to reach new customers and market your products and services. That you manage your online company or not, you know probably already to what extent it is important to advertise, but if you exploit your online company, you have to understand that there is many available free advertising in the form of classifications in search engines.

Well-known search engines, such as Google, rank websites based on complex algorithms designed to determine which websites are most relevant to particular search terms. Therefore, by taking the time and effort necessary to optimize your website for relevant search terms, you can be rewarded with a high ranking in the search engines for these terms.

  10. To my mind, being viral is a very good strategy. Just look the Old Spice Shampoo advertisement. It became viral and that's what made this ad so powerful because the company was interacting with consumers.
Being viral can also be dangerous if its not expected, because everything is going fast on the social medias.

  11. Personally, if I am trying to promote something online, I would rely on both viral and SEO methods. I believe SEO can help people to provide useful servicies for website owners such as content development, technical advice on website development, and experitise in specific markets and geographies. Also, viral method allows huge amount of people to observe some events by sharing abroad. When there are 100 reviews on a particular video and if those people all shared it at least once, then the number of reviewers will duplicate. Therefore, viral can help extend something incredibly broad while SEO can help to research the potential advantages and damages.

  12. In my opinion, it's better to focus on the SEO strategy. I'd say that it's safer first of all if you want to make your business grow. Using hashtags, strategic words and paying attention to when is the best time to post on each social media will bring you more consistent results than trying to go viral. Of course posting a content that becomes viral is always a bonus for a brand because it boosts very well its marketing technique for a moment. But this is the main problem, it only lasts for a moment. That's why as a long term strategy I would definitely use SEO: a tool accessible to everyone - which doesn't depend on luck contrary to "getting viral".

  13. I think going viral is very hard, and because we went viral once doesn't mean we can do it again. I will focus more on the SEO strategy and I will use this the old saying," Rome wasn't build in a day". If we work hard with SEO strategy we will see progress and success little by little and we will be building a stronger business.

  14. In my opinion, viral-marketing is better tool because it can be more cost-effective than traditional marketing efforts, especially for advertising costs. Besides, it can be spread and shared quickly from person to person. For instance, a viral video on the Internet has the ability to reach a huge international audience without us having to invest money or make any extra effort. Thanks to this, a small company or even a private individual can go extremely far.

  15. Hello everybody,

In my opinion it’s better to focus on Search Engine Optimization because I think it's essential for an online marketing strategy. Moreover, implementing a strategy is free, unlike paid referencing. In a few days we can clearly improve its referencing. We can also get a better conversion rate compared to the paid search which is really important for the business. With a viral strategy we have faster results but also ephemeral. With SEO you have profitable results in the medium and long term. In addition, if have followed the "best pratices" of SEO. You have to create quality content. Which will be more beneficial for customers, who will want to come back to our site. However implementing this kind of strategy although free requires time. I think it must be part of a more global strategy by associating it with paid search.

  16. Viral Marketing has been part of many company's marketing strategy because they are cost-effective and best way to reach out the targeted audience, from person to person. I have seen that it has been very effective especially for specialized targeted audience such as deaf and hard of hearing community where "visual" language helps these people to continue to be engaged in the community both personal and business level. Video has been the most viral marketing in the community because many deaf and hard of hearing are not able to comprehend written language, but they understand better by watching video with contents including captioned and sign-languages (any sign-language) that is easily understood.

Reaching out targeted audience using SEO and Hashtags strategies are time-consuming and not cost effective for this particular situation. However, I know that may be able to find these targeted audiences in the marketplace, I will continue to use these strategies that will help to improve my brand and to increase traffic to my website. To make it effective, I had to make sure my homepage content is optimized visitors to keep coming back and engage with my business as long as I am using the AIDA methods. (Attention, Interest, Desire and Action) at minimum cost.

  17. Going viral is a much more powerful notion. Unfortunately the viral content is usually destined to disappear as quickly as it happened despite the great interest. Therefore I think it is more valuable and intelligent to build a strategy that will ensure that the content will be seen, relayed over the long term through hashtags, timing or others strategies.

  20. Hi all!

It depends on your goal. Is it more for an event, a single day sale? Are you launching your brand? In that case it's better to be viral, because it can put a very big attention on you for a limited time. But don't forget to do some basic SEO, so the people can find you.

If you are an established brand, with no new product. Your customer better have to find you easily and then you have to focus on your SEO.

  21. Hi! I think it's better to focus on a steady search engine optimization, because what you hope for is an established presence online, which can only be achieved through time. Although becoming viral can get you a lot of views fast, it does not give you a sustained amount of views over time. However, once you know how to get the views through a steady SEO, I feel that it isn't a bad idea to become viral in order to get that initial spark of attention, as long as you can maintain it.
