Wk7 Using LinkedIn to Market Yourself

Greetings Social Media Marketers!

I hope that everyone is doing great!

This week we will focus on how we can use social media as a business tool, on multiple levels, certainly to market our businesses, but also to market ourselves, and to foster business contacts and networks.  Learn more about the various uses and benefits of using Linkedin here

To begin on this endeavor, please open an account on Linkedin.  If you already have one there is no need to open another one. (Don't worry I won't force you to publish "embarrassing" course assignments.)  Be sure to complete your online profile including a photo and basic professional information (you will not be graded on the depth of the information, but I encourage you to do your best and take pride in your profile).

Next, you are to search through "People" and:
1) Follow at least 3 "celebrity" or famous business people (for example Bill Gates, or any CEOs, etc).
2) Follow at least 3 companies (organizations, or companies that you admire, or that you have worked for in the past, etc).
3) Look for and join at least 2 open or public groups (you can select to participate in one of these groups to meet the requirements of this week's other assignment of participating in an online community).

Lastly, you are welcomed to send me a request to connect if you'd like, but I don't count as the 3 minimum.  You will not be graded differently if you choice to follow me, or not.

Comment below, on what people and organizations you chose to follow and why?  What can you learn or "gain" by following these people and organizations?  Discuss if these align with your brand, or if they improve your credibility, or if you can learn about your desired industry as a result.  Consider, how might you use Linkedin to help you build your network and that might serve you in the future?

I look forward to seeing everyone's comments!

  1. I finally created a LinkedIn account after years of resisting. I have never even explored Linkedin before today and I know that there is so much to be explored. More than the social aspect (i.e., (re) connecting with people I already know), I am beginning to see that this is so much different from Facebook, the only social media account I've had until very recently.

For starters, I followed Bills Gates, Hillary Clinton and Oprah Winfrey. I followed Gates because he is a brilliant person who has impacted my life without him even knowing me, Hillary Clinton because she is a woman who has challenged norms and stereotypes and Oprah Winfrey because she has fashioned herself into an instrument of change. Like Clinton, Winfrey has also broken barriers and challenged societal norms and stereotypes and has played an important role in the lives of many women, including mine. For organizations, I followed Leadership and Management, Education, Professional Women, Recruiting and Hiring and the University of the Philippines (which I also asked to join). Taken together, these groups/organizations stand for some of the things I want to be and I want to know. I hope to gain more insights on the my current and future as an administrative professional. I have always believed in continuing education, both formally (in school) and informally (through knowledge/information shared by known thought leaders and professionals who are recognized in their fields. I believe my personal brand is still evolving and by following these individuals and groups, I hope to better define my identity as a professional.

I asked to join two groups on LinkedIn (versus on google or yahoo), simply because I got the impression that the groups on LinkedIn are more "real" and professional. I asked to join a healthy eating group (who doesn't have weight problems, right?!) and the University of the Philippines Alumni group. These groups represent some of my interests - I want to try to be healthier, and I want to connect with my roots.

I am only beginning to scratch the surface of how LinkedIn can be used to build my network. I have never attempted to build a professional network until now and I believe it can help me in ways beyond job search. This will unfold as I learn more about this platform and I define my brand better. Whatever it will be, I owe it to this SMM class which has opened my eyes to social media beyond Facebook.

  3. First try to set up my LinkedIn account! Easy and quick.

I followed Bill Gates, Reed Hastings, and Jeff Weiner. I chose to follow these people because they are the most influencing people nowadays. Bill Gates came up to my head because I recently read an article about him. It was his thought about the amount of taxes he has to pay. Especially, I followed Jeff Weiner because he is the CEO at LinkedIn and I didn't knew it at first because I am totally new to this social network service.

For companies and organizations, I followed Microsoft, LinkedIn, Google, Amazon, NASA, Starbucks, UCR, SpaceX, Apple, Netflix, Airbnb and Instagram. I followed a lot, but those organizations were all related to me and what I am interested in, so I followed every companies that came up to my mind. By following those people and organizations, I can get the latest information and learn more about them.

By doing LinkedIn I think that it aligns with my brand and also can improve credibility. In the future, I could use this platform to connect and find more people related to my interest. If I attract more people, my brand will become more creative and detailed by interacting with a lot of people who have different thoughts. Still I'm not used to LinkedIn yet, but I found out that LinkedIn is especially useful for B2C and B2B marketing. So, in a few years when I am ready to get my job I think I could learn and gain more advantage than now.

  4. LinkedIn is a great tool for acquiring new contacts and communicating with them. It will never have been easier to interact with your customers, partners or suppliers.
And this interaction happens through the regular distribution of your news. Whether it is information about your company or more generally your industry, your messages are not limited to your traditional contacts, but open to a broader target we say, a target of prospects that you would not have touched yet. In this target, prospects, likely to become future customers, but also followers who can become prescribers by recommending your company and its services, simply because your image will inspire confidence.
In short, this social network is a great tool if you want to support the online presence of your company. But creating your network will not be enough to be professionally credible. It will be necessary to maintain it! LinkedIn is a pool of professional opportunities. And only by being there can you access it.
Regarding my profile, I chose to follow the following profiles: Emmanuel Macron, Bill Gates and Elon Musk. Why? Because I think they are all different influencers, but with the same foresight or at least the same vision: change the world in their own way. Or at least make it better.
Also, I chose to follow three companies that are; Orpea - Hermes and Havas group.
Indeed, I like to follow their news because, being one of their former trainee employee, I like to see how their activity has evolved over time.
These companies have brought me a lot and it is a pleasure to have them on my Linkedin network.

  5. Hello. For this week, I joined Linkedin website and followed some people, companies, and groups. First of all, I followed Bill Gates, Hillary Clinton and Ed Sheeran. I decided to follow Bill Gates because he is one of the famous people among the economy, so I wanted to know how he uploads his notices. For Hillary Clinton, I don't know much information about political but wanted to learn more about world political issues. Since Hillary Clinton was 2016 Presidential Candidate, I would like to follow her and look forward her posts. Lastly, I really love Ed Sheeran songs, so I just wanted to follow him as a Fan.
For companies, I followed Starbucks Coffee Korea, Samsung Electronics and Apple. Due to the fact that I am interested in Coffee, I followed it as usual. Also, Samgsung is one of the top electronic company in the world and it is from Korea, I admired it. For Apple, I am using iphone and want to buy Macbook before I go back to Korea, so I followed it! These companies are the ones that I admire and am interested in.
Furthermore for joining the group, I joined Travel Community and horseback riding. Since I love traveling around and has been since now, I wanted to share my traveling experiences with others. For horseback riding, I have been riding horse for more than 10 years now and want to hear other riders experiences.
As I joined the group, I think Linkedin is a great website to follow others and learn about them. I think this week's assignemnt was a great opportunity for me to add other people, company, and groups.

  6. Hi!

I've finally created my own Linkedin profile! We sometimes tend to think that the planet of the social media revolves around Facebook, when it is not the other pretenders in the throne that are Google +, Twitter, Pinterest or still Instagram. They are certainly the most known, the most controversial media and, more often than otherwise, the most used on an individual and professional point of view. I think It is normal, we share our moods there, photos or videos of the most recent journey either a celebration.

As far as I'm concerned, LinkedIn is a platform which distinguishes itself from the others. LinkedIn is particularly useful to show its career pathway or inquire on the business current events!

As regards "celebrities" I decided to follow Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak and Kevin Systrom: I have make this choice because these 3 businessmen answer to my criteria of the ideal entrepreneur that is to say someone determined, organized, who knows how to plan, disciplined, who is self-confident and in the project, creative, and the most important who is fascinated.
As regards organizations I decided to follow an organization that I used to work for as a saler: it's Roland-Garros (Tennis). Also, I've followed Instagram and LVMH. These are 3 organizations very important in the business world. They knew how to diversify: whether it is in the quality of its clothes for Roland Garros, the display of its application for Instagram either the variety of its products for LVMH.

Follow these celbreties and organizations will improve my credibility in the aim to implement my own brand. Now, I'm following serious people who have an incredible potential! I shall use LinkedIn in a strategic way. I shall begin to have a coherent network in my centers of interests and in connection with my future project. It can only help.

To conclude, I can say that Linkedin is the "Facebook of the businesses".

  7. Creating an LinkedIn Acount was easy, but searching and following people was little challenging for me.

For orgnizations, I follwed Disney, Apple, YouTube and SONY music Corp. I follwed them because I thought I could have a informations about music industry that I need for my brand, and also I could have that kind of informations as early as possible.
For people, I followed for my own interest than for my brand. I followed Bill Gates, Kevin Systrom, Pyo Changwon and Jensen Ackles.
As you all know, Bill Gates and Kevin Systrom are(was) CEO of Microsoft and Instagram. Pyo changwon is Korean criminal psychologist, which I want to be in future. Finally, Jensen Ackles is one of my favorite actor.
Though I follwed people with my own interest, I still think Jensen and all organizations will help my brand business. it's because my brand is about technology and entertainment among people, so that I can gain many helpful informations such as in YouTube.

Also, I found out that it's very easy to sign in in LinkedIn and create a proflie. I think I can easily change my status and search for a job that I'm interested in!

  8. LinkedIn is one of the most powerful resources online in order to market yourself. It doesn’t matter if you are looking to become known as an influential person in your industry or niche, if you want to sell more products, get more leads, drive traffic to your website, find a killer job, get more clients, build your brand, sell tickets to an event, receive funding, venture capital, or sponsorship dollars, there here are seven steps you should take advantage of while marketing yourself on LinkedIn. The profile should also include a personal element. Instead of making it look like a boring resume with a bunch of bullet point achievements, share your personal voice. Tell people who you are, who you help, and how you help them throughout your headline, summary and the rest of your profile. Adding this will make others want to connect with you instead of put them to sleep with your boring resume.

  9. At first I looked for people that I follow on Instagram, the famous photographers or youtubers I kept following everywhere since the beginning of this class. But quickly I realised they were NOT on LinkedIn. I found on but it was his personal account (I still tried to send him an Inmail... we'll see later on).

I understood that LinkedIn is mostly for business people than artists. But that was not a problem, when I built my network a year ago I built it in a way that I could be linked with all the students in my school, all the Artistic director I could find, all the digital marketers, etc. But yes I also followed a numerous amount of companies or schools:
    - BETC, OGILVY & MATHER, DDB, PUBLICIS, HAVAS (all are Advertising Agencies)
    - INSEEC, Harvard, Stanford, HEC, Sup de Pub (for Schools)
But I also followed important medias:
    - Forbes, Les Echos, Le Monde, Bloomberg, Harvard Business Review

LinkedIn is made to be a professional platform where you see not really the hobbies of people but mostly their skills, formation, experience, domain of activity because it's supposed to be the social media that you use when you want a job (doesn't really work for now). That's why I wanted my profile to look as clean and sharp as possible, all the managers who will look to my profile must see clearly that I'm into design, advertising and digital marketing. They must see that my Interests are GREAT schools (even if I never been to it will surely make me look smarter), great advertising agencies (even if I never worked there it will surely make me look better qualified).

But then you also want to get inspired or make people know that you like/follow the powerful person of our society. That's why I followed the French President Emmanuel Macron, but also many American personalities like Simon Sinek (a great orator and motivating leader), Richard Branson or Mark Zukerberg. I want to see their post and get motivation through them. I also want people to see their profiles when they'll my interests on my profile.
The more qualified and reputed are your interests the more qualified and reputed you look.

Finally I also discovered the groups on LinkedIn and I asked to join all the marketing/digital/design/advertising groups that were suggested to me.

This assignment made me think that I should clean my profile a little bit from the "not qualified/reputed" pages I follow and that I should soon update my experience and formation.

All these people are very influential in their respected sports.
    And 3 three companies are
TaylorMade, Callaway Golf , NFL .

TaylorMade and Callaway are going to add knowledge for the equipment and NFL about the game and players.
The two groups I'm following are
The Sand Trap and The Hackers Paradise Both are about golf . I'm already learning a lot of stuff from both by reading other people comments.

  11. It was my first time to set up my account on LinkedIn.
At first, I followed Bill Gates, Jeff Weiner, and Dara Khosrowshahi for "celebrity" or famous business people. The reason why I chose them is that they are the CEO at Microsoft, LinkedIn, and Uber. They all are successful in business, and they have influenced our lives and thoughts.I would like to know and understand what they think and spread information or their knowledge.

Next, I followed Google, Amazon, and Apple for companies because they all are ranked in LinkedIn Top Companies 2017: Where the world wants to work now. I'm interested in a company's jobs, interested in a company's brand and employees, and employee retention.

I think I can promote my brand as an authority by using LinkedIn. LinkedIn can be a great means for content marketing, and this can become a channel for me to be a trusted source for business insights in my brand.

  12. Hello!
This week I decided to follow 3 people who inspired me: Oprah Winfrey because she has a big career and a lot of experience so she can discuss about things that interest me. Also, I followed Kevin Johnson who is the CEO of Starbucks, this company is still growing everywhere in the world so it can be good to see the CEO point of view. Finally, I follow Jerome Jarre, he is a young French comedian but now he started his own project which is to help refugees from different countries all over the world. I like to follow how things are evolving and to see the positive aspects of those actions.
Then for the organizations, I follow Kering which is a luxury group, I followed them since I have created my account 2 years ago, as I want to work in Fashion industry. Then Amazon, because this company is always innovating. To finish, I followed Tesla because electric cars are growing and this brand is ahead every other one is this industry.
Smart Textiles and New Luxury Network International are the 2 groups I decided to follow, because it can be good to be aware of what is going on and the opportuntes that can be found for my future job.
By following those people and brands, I think it can help me to see a clearer vision of my career and what I can achieve. Linkedin is a powerful tool in the labor market but I think it is better to have a minimum of job experiences when using it because if you don't have any experiences people will not find you and it won't be beneficial. This social media is a very good idea because people know what they want when they are connected : looking for a job, find a person to fill a vacancy position, ask for recommendations on their skills. It can be very useful.

  13. I personally think that LinkedIn is a social media platform very different from the others. LinkedIn is particularly useful for professional relationships, finding a job, an employee, to be informed… I’d say that it is a “serious” social media.

As for the "celebrities" I decided to follow Bill Gates, Kofi Annan and David Cameron: I have make this choice because these 3 personality because they are great leaders, promoting peace. I find them very inspiring and galvanizing which is exactly what I’m looking for.
As regards organizations I decided to follow an organization that is major leader in the financial field and one of the most (if not THE most) powerful firm in the world: Goldman Sachs. Also, I've followed HSBC because I’m going to do an internship in their firm this summer, my last selection is Harvard, because I value knowledge a lot, and Harvard is simply the best university if the world !

Follow these celebrities and organizations will give more motivation and inspiration to implement my own brand. These people moved mountains, and I'm sure having them as a source of inspiration can only be a good thing !

  14. I’ve decided to follow people from entrepreneurship area and franchising. This both areas are inspiration for me and I would like to work on one of it.
I was not inspired by LinkedIn because it’s all about showing virtual words and facts. I’ve created an account about 1 year ago because my school wanted us to create one. At the first time, I wasn’t taking care of it but since September I try to follow inspirational people and to interact with some of them.
I know it’s important to create a network and nowadays LinkedIn can be a great tool to increase it. Nevertheless, I’m still thinking that you should see people face to face to trust them and to know if they are useful for your career. We don’t have to forget it’s still virtual.

    Hello,
I can appear very common but I chose to follow Tesla, Apple, and Google. Why because to my mind these 3 companies are the most innovative of our generation. They combine Great communication, technology, innovation and an incredible management. By the way the three are in the top 10 of the greatest companies on Linkedin.
I think following those companies can inspire me. It can also make me aware about new opportunities and new technologies they are developing. I am very interesting in those new technologies.
Then I followed Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Marc Zuckerberg. In the same way than the companies those people are very influent and they are genius. They create some brands that are part of the most powerful of the planet. That is thanks to that kind of people that we can evolve. The ideas they have are very inspirational and the three of them are great managers. They are model to me.
Following this people/companies can make people see I am interested in innovation and model of success.
I would build my Linkedin so people know in what i am interested, my experiences, my professional experiences. I would post article that are important for me about the news.

  16. Hello everybody,

I decide to follow first Bill Gates because I really like what he is doing. He is one of the richest men in the world and now he gives his life to its humanitarian foundation. And I really enjoy to read his article and see his videos. Then I decide to follow Tesla, because I really like what they say. You just have to look the first sentence of the « About us ». They say « Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy through increasingly affordable electric vehicles » and I really like that. They try to transform the world. Then I choose to follow Amazon because I am really impressed with the work that company do. On the shopping side, but also on the technological side. I follow also Apple, Space X, Airbnb and Netlfix in every field (mostly tech) they are really important actors and they don’t hesitate to take risks.

I’m particularly active on LinkedIn, I think it is one of the most powerful social media to build professional network. Indeed I think that LinkedIn can help me to build my network and keep in touch with people I will never do usually. Like for instance to keep in touch with people for my previous jobs. I think also I can improve my credibility by posting/sharing articles that I like. Stay active on LinkedIn it is really important so people discover you every day. You can find a lot of good opportunities on LinkedIn like jobs and even meet-up to network even more but in real life.

  17. Hi everyone.
I followed Bill Gates because he is one of the most successful business man in the world. I also followed Barbara Chapman, she is the CEO and director of ASB bank and John A. Byrne, the Fast Company & BusinessWeek Former Editor.

I also follow organizations like Apple, Windows and Amazon.
E commerce is the new trend in business. I can learn how they market themselves through LinkedIn.
For me, I think LinkedIn is a good tool to get connected with people near me. For example, I am looking for internship in marketing. I can find more experienced people in marketing field near me. I can talk with them and listen to their comments and suggestions. It is a good tool to meet different kinds of people. I can get more chances and opportunities when using LinkedIn.

  18. Hello everybody,
I really have a lot of good thoughts about Linkedin, it is a marvellous tool for active people, it helps you met people in the same areas of work, and it is definitely a really efficient way to find jobs or internship.
So i followed Groupe Bertrand that is one of the biggest investment group in the restauration area. It is a real good group for me to follow because the field of restauration passionates me and it helps me keep an eye on the movements of that area and even about good job opportunity.
I also followed Space X that's just for me i found this company brilliant. Finally i followed Ventes Privées a e-trade digital platform that is the leader in this sector in France. It is our amazon!
As celebrities i followed Elon Musk, Jacques Grangeon and Bill gates.
The two first are the Heads of space x and Ventes privées so i followed them to have a continuity in my flow of information. I choose Bill Gates also because well, he is the boss.
To conclude i really appreciate Linkedin as the tool it can be but i am really cautious about not thinking it as a classic social media. It is your professional image so you really have to controle your informations and your data.

  23. Hello everyone!

These past two years, I've dedicated a lot of time to optimizing my LinkedIn profile, ensuring that recruiters who are searching for someone with my skillset shall be able to locate and contact in the most efficient manner possible.

This platform is the 'Great Unknown' of social media networks, since users tend to focus on others, such as Facebook and Twitter. However, from a professional point of view, we can all agree that LinkedIn is truly the Facebook of companies, both from a prospective employer's point of view, as from an aspiring job-seeker!

By allowing users to follow the progress of their star companies, and preferred public figures (I follow John Lasseter, the creative director of Pixar Animation Studios; James Lange, the Strategy and Operations Manager at Google; and Conrad Vernon, one of the animators for the Shrek franchise.

These three professionals not only work in three of my star companies, but also occupy positions which I aspire to reach in the future. Being able to track their actions and professional development presents a marvelous learning opportunity.

In regard to the companies, I decided to follow Pixar Animation Studios; the Walt Disney Company; and DreamWorks Animation.

By employing LinkedIn strategically, I shall build a network centered on my aspirations and interests, thus aiding the development of my personal, as well as my professional brand.

  24. Hi!
The three people I'm following on LinkedIn are Bill Gates, Justin Trudeau, and Jack Ma. The three companies that I'm following are Microsoft, Apple, and Google. The three people I follow are all people I respect and look up to. Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft with a net worth of 92 billion, is very accomplished and still gives a lot back to charity. Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, is a very modern figurehead, trying to make things more equal in Canada. Jack Ma, a Chinese entrepreneur worth 42 billion, has the business know-how to bring a Chinese company to new heights. The three companies I follow are all tech companies that have massive improvements in our everyday lives and will continue to do so.

While these companies and people may not necessarily align themselves with my brand, they all have ideas that I can take and learn from. By adding them to my LinkedIn, I can stay up to date on these massive conglomerates in order to stay ahead of the curve. Although I have only just started using LinkedIn, I can tell that this will help me secure a job in the future.
