Week 1 Discussion



Greetings class

I hope that everyone is doing well!  For this first week you should have read the first three chapters in our text, Social Media Marketing: A Strategic Approach.  Many important fundamental concepts in Social Media were discussed.  One important topic I'd like to discuss was introduced in chapter one, which are the characteristics of a successful social media marketer.  I encourage you to practice these same behaviors for our class which include:

·       Staying on top of social media trends.
·       Establish and maintain your social media presence
·       Practice effective writing for social media.
·       Welcome participation and feedback from your audience.
·       Remember that what you know today may not be valid tomorrow. 


HOMEWORK:
After completing the reading this week, respond to this post as a comment and answer the questions:

(a) What do you think is Social Media? 
(b) Why are Social Networks important in the marketing mix?
(c) How prepared are you to be an effective social media marketer?

    1. (a) What do you think is Social Media?
      - Social Media is the online content which people can share such as their think, opinions and their point of view. Some examples of Social Media are Twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc. I think Social Media links people to people. people can communicate more faster and more efficiently. Also, they can choose the most reliable(safe and fast) way when in distressing situation.
      There are many advantages that caused by Social Media, but we have to be careful for the disadvantages such as invasion of privacy, that are caused of Social Media.
      (b) Why are Social Networks important in the marketing mix?
      - Like I said above, Social media can help people to make decisions. Marketers can use social networks to marketing mix so that people choose their product, such as comparing themselves in product, distribution, and communication.
      (c) How prepared are you to be an effective Social Media Marketer?
      - Honestly, I am just a beginner to be an Social Media Marketer. But I have taken courses called consumer and marketing psychology, so I think I am ready to have a real experience.

    2. Great insights Hae. Yes, social media (SM) can help marketers make effective decisions. The biggest mistake I see marketers make when they jump into SM is that they don't have a plan. In order to succeed in SM we have to be strategic, otherwise it's just like playing the lottery and the odds are not very good. I look forward to hearing more from you.

  2. (a) What do you think is Social Media?
    -Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and etc are what we now call as the social media. I think social media is what we are mostly interested in daily life these days. As the technology develops, many people tend to rely on social media and it is the most convenient and fastest tool to send out and gather new information from various people.
    (b) Why are Social Networks important in the marketing mix?
    -Marketing mix includes 4 factors which are product, price, place, and promotion. I think these factors are all closely related to social media. Social media can help show the product with photos or videos, it can be cost-effective, there is no time and space constraints, and most importantly can widely promote to various people around the whole world with a simple 'click'.
    (c) How prepared are you to be an effective social media marketer?
    -I have been using Facebook and Instagram for several years, so I think I can be a good social media marketer!

    1. Great insights Yoo Jeong. Indeed, people are going crazy for social media, but it's important to remember that we must examine the effectiveness of marketing channels closely. "Traditional" channels still have a lot of value and can be more effective for certain products and services. For example, most people don't "shop" for a doctor on social media. Most people don't shop for funeral services on social media. In marketing we must match the marketing channel to the consumer need.

  3. (a) What do you think is Social Media?
    Social Media is free content provided from businesses and people who are trying to influence the way their audience thinks or feels. Examples of popular social media are: Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, and Instagram. Although able to be used interchangeably, I think that the key difference between social media and social networking is that: with social media, we are audiences to businesses while with social networking, we share our lives with other people.

    (b) Why are Social Networks important in the marketing mix?
    Social Networks are important because most millennials around the world use it. Social media is an easy way to brand a business's image if used effectively, and it correlates well to the 'positioning' of a brand.

    (c) How prepared are you to be an effective social media marketer?
    I feel that I am not well prepared to be an effective social media marketer, but with practice I can become one.

Great insights Julius, I think it's better to realize that we might not be prepared to use this tool as a marketing weapon than to think that just because we are consumers of SM that we automatically know how to use it. I like flying in an airplane, but that doesn't mean that I know how to fly one! ;)

  4. a. Social Media is the electronic media for people to interact with each other.
    b. Nowadays, almost every person has access to the Internet. It is important to know how to do marketing online. That is the trend.
    c. For me, I had access to Internet when I was in elementary school. I am familiar with Internet. I think I am ready to take this class.

  5. (a) What do you think is Social Media?

    Social medias are the product of the web 2.0, they are web sites where the user, not only see some piece of content, but he can provide the content. The user can interact with the web owner, with brands, with other users. I think social media is the interactive web. The web where users can answer to each others and share content either made by them or made by someone else.
    That's why it's called media, it's because a piece of content is always involved, an information like a text post, a video or a picture. And then it's also "Social" and it's where you see how fast the internet global community built itself. How people genuinely reach out to each other on the platforms, how they "like" each others and so on..

    (b) Why are Social Networks important in the marketing mix?

    They're getting more and more important because their place in the society is getting really bigger every year. They take the spot of media and sometimes lead the news/informations. They're becoming real media like were TV or the Press and so it's impossible to avoid them in a marketing mix. Simply because they're totally inside the society and so the target/consumer.

    (c) How prepared are you to be an effective social media marketer?

    I am really impatient to learn more about social media marketing !

  6. a.) What do you think is Social Media?
    The world wide web has enabled people from across the globe to not only have access to information from anywhere at any given time. It has also given birth to the phenomenon that is social media, something that enables people to communicate and hold discussions, share profound or inane information through different tools such as websites, applications, etc. It (social media) focuses on social engagement and interaction whether casual and friendly (such as face book) or professional (linked-in). It encourages discussions and a free sharing of sentiments from participants who may not necessarily know each other. It is both a platform for and a source of practically any kind of information.

    b.) Why are Social Networks important in the marketing mix?

    The importance of social networks in the marketing mix cannot be over emphasized. For many people, social networks are their primary mode of communication, more than print or broadcast media. a number of publications have switched from paper to digital, or at least part print and part digital. Access to social networks is easier for many people than is access to a newspaper, for instance. Because of this, it has become easier to reach most people via social media marketing than it is through traditional marketing. It is because of this wide reach and easy access that Social Networks have become an integral part of the marketing mix.

    c.) How prepared are you to be an effective Social Media Marketer?
    I am prepared to at least try my best to be an effective social media marketer.

  7. (a) What do you think is Social Media?
    Social Media is a way to connect with people far, near, wherever through the internet. Sites like Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, and Twitter allow people to interact with each other online.

    (b) Why are Social Networks important in the marketing mix?
    In this age of new technology and younger generations, Social Networks are one of the many ways to reach the public. Ads on the side of website or Sponsorships from one's favorite youtuber can allow many people to see the product. In the case of Youtube, people can even see how the products work and how much other people like it, causing them to want to buy as well.

    (c) How prepared are you to be an effective social media marketer?
    While I am by nature a shy person, I am fully prepared to contribute and to be an effective social media marketer.

    Social Media is a way to connect people each other. It can be use for personal life but also as a good way to make business. In my opinion, it can be very successful for your business to have a good social media strategy.

    (b) Why are Social Networks important in the marketing mix?
    Nowadays, many companies take care of the social Networks because it's a good way to communicate with our generation. I think it's the best way to promote your product or your company.
    (c) How prepared are you to be an effective social media marketer?
    To be honest, I've choose this class instead of I don't like social media. I'm aware that social media is an important part of our future so I need to improve my skills.

    1. Thank you great insights Mathieu. You definitely don't have to like SM on a personal level to use it for marketing. You might be surprised to learn that a lot of people who use SM marketing a lot, don't use it for personal reasons (or at least limit it on a personal level).

    I think social media is a very accessible mean to connect people without any physical bariere.

    (b) Why are Social Networks important in the marketing mix?
    Because social networks are a growing platform gaining more and more popularity and can be really effective if your target the right crowd.

    (c) How prepared are you to be an effective social media marketer?
    I am not so much into social media, so Im ready to build new skills and I am sure that it will be an asset for my professional or personal life.

    A social media is an online service (a website, an app...) that link people together. By posting updates, pictures ... the user can maintain/create a virtual relationship with his/her social network.

    (b) Why are Social Networks important in the marketing mix?

    Social networks are important because they become more and more popular. Users posts create a lot of data that can be used to target efficiently prospects. The users can also interact directly with the company throughout the brand page, this is part of the customer service. As well a brand reputation can be destroyed with social. It is important that the brand establish a good relationship with their followers.

    (c) How prepared are you to be an effective Social Media Marketer?

    I am an active user of all the most popular social media. But I need to switch to the professional side and know the tool that I can use.

  11. (a) What do you think is Social Media?
    Social Media is a tool to bring people together on a common subjet. For instance you can meet people on Instagram because you like the same type of pictures, or on YouTube when you subscribe to a specific type of content.

    (b) Why are Social Networks important in the marketing mix?
    Social Networks are really important because now you can easily reach your target. And it is also really important because you can communicate some information.
    It is really easy to do it, for example Facebook Ads is really powerful, you can reach every type of target.

    (c) How prepared are you to be an effective Social Media Marketer?
    I think I'm ready to be an effective Social Media Marketer because I use social media for a long time. But now I wan't to learn how to do it for a professional use. So I think I'm ready.

  12. a.- Social Media is a way of communication and to do business, for families it makes them feel closer, for business it lets them advertise, promote new products, promotions etc. Lately I have seen it as a way to make money. People that own good blogs they get paid to test products and give opinions about it or they get paid to advertise on their blogs. Private people use it to advertise for themselves and offer their services, like personal trainers, inspirational speakers, nutritionists etc.

    b.-Social Networks are important because if we need any kind of information we just use our phones we check for what we need in Social Media. No body waits for Sunday newspapers any more to get the coupons, or the mail to see the weekly ads and promotions. People go online and check in there, make a screenshot and save it. Many of the companies include “check our Facebook or Instagram” on their webpages, companies know people like that. Businesses need to be careful because social media is another way for customer service to be efficient reaching the customer expectations. Having an efficient Social Network web page for a business is a full-time job and it is treated like any other department in the company.

    c.- I do not think I am prepared to be a social media marketer right now. The only experience I have is on my personal Facebook and Instagram. As I said on answer b, I think it’s a full-time job or part of a full-time job. After reading the first 2 chapters of the book I want to open a you-tube channel for the company I work for but I need more knowledge before I run it by my boss.
    My husband and I are being thinking on opening a blog about sports so with his knowledge about sports and me administrating the blog we can see a good future, but right now I’m not prepared to do it.

    1. Awesome! You can definitely easily start a sport blog. You can also blog for bigger companies that hire bloggers. I'll be honest, the pay is not much when you are new, but the opportunities grow with time and persistence.

    Social Media are communication platforms on line that the users create their own content, with a lot of different Social Media tools like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube..etc. You can be connect with people from all over the world.

    Social Networks are increasingly becoming more and more important. Nowadays all the companies use this to find new employers and to identify their target. it is an easy way to be connected with everyone.

    (c) How prepared are you to be an effective Social Media Marketer?
    I really like Social Media tools so I think I could be a very good Social Media Marketer. I want to learn more about how to used Social Media in the professional field.

  14. (A) Social Media is such a vast term that has changed the way we live, understand and revolve in our world.  Both amazing and dangerous at the same time. We have become so depended with this technology content that we cannot function without.   It is a web of sites or applications of many veins connecting us via Internet for information, networking, research, social, ideas, news, etc. I could go on and on.  

    (B) In marketing world, it is another huge impact how we market ideas, depending on opinions, 'likes' and shares.  It is almost a popularity contest to get your product and Brand recognized. The social media is so vast that some attention can go incredibly far. How often, getting your product and brand on many sites, pushing hash tags, the potential is unlimited.  

    (C) As for my stance on social media, I have basic knowledge in the field. I know there is so much to understand and to learn more about the Social Media Marketing platform to respond and upkeep with the customer attention and demand more efficiently. I do believe I will become much more experienced and knowledgeable after taking this class.

    1. Nicely put Todd, thank you. Yes, in a nutshell, SM revolutionized communication for the purpose of marketing. In the "old" days, you had to be rich and have lots of money to communicate with the masses and you had a couple of options (1) newpaper ads, (2) radio ads, (3) television ads. These three channels were extremely expensive (they still are). Marketing communication would flow one way, from the top elite/big companies down to the masses. Social media is revolutionary because it provided a channel for any person to communicate to the masses and also for consumers to communicate back to the big companies advertising. This is both a great opportunity, but also a huge threat to companies. We will be discussing this throughout the course.

    Social Networks are important because thanks to them you will be able to develop and sell your concept faster. Also, online social networks are now more and more use for the funding of a project, platform like Ulule or Kickstarter can be taken in account to help someone to develop an idea.

    To my mind, I’m convinced that Social Media Marketing is the future for the next generation. In our current life everybody is using Social Media at everyday and every time.

    (b) Why are Social Networks important in the marketing mix?

    It is essential from now on for the latter to learn to use Social Media in order to address new targets and develop their market. This new communication channel allows not only to strengthen the presence of its company on the Internet, but also to increase the number of customers and to recruit differently future collaborators.

    (c) How prepared are you to be an effective social media marketer?

    I want to obtain the necessary skills to become an effective social media marketer, such as understand social networks and strategies of influence. I think that It's all about "practice".

    For my part Social Media is a way of communicating and staying linked to people, even the ones you just qualify as acquaintances. It's also a way nowadays to show that you're a part of a community, especially for the young generations where we can see a growing interest in social networks very early.

    (b) Why are Social Networks important in the marketing mix?
    Social medias are important for the marketing mix because they're a way of promoting a product or service by advertising faster and easier than before, through facebook or instagram for example. It gives you a bigger visibility, and reaches a better number of consumers in a short period of time.

    (c) How prepared are you to be an effective social media marketer?
    Right now I'm just prepared with my personal knowledge of social medias, meaning that what I know depends on my utilization of social medias, which is not negligible.

  18. a)Social Media is a new mean created to allow people to communicate trough the Internet. It allows to share experiences, photos, vidéos, or even professional services. The Social Media facilitates sharing by offering a faster way to communicate and exchange.

    b) Social is needed in the Marketing mix because it is today very present in the business. Catching customers on the social media is became a real way to be efficient. Companies which are not present on the social media are not run the right way because social media is very important to make your company visible.


    c) I grew up with social media and the internet. In this way new technologies are something i know and i practice since my young age. If mix that with the knowledge i will acquire in this course it will be good.

  19. (a) What do you think is Social Media?
    --> Personally, social media can be one of the important technique that can lead us to more developed generation. Since social media contains all the websites or applications that people can easily create and share contents to commuincate with other people around the world, like networking. Anything that are online can be the source of social media, such as Facebook, instagram, email, and more.

    (b) Why are Social Networks important in the marketing mix?
    To start with, the definition of a marketing mix is a set of actions that a company uses to promote its product. Four Ps are involved to make up a typical marketing mix, which are Price, Product, Promotion and Place. Social networks are important in the marketing mix because company need to communicate with others in order to promote their products. Therefore, network is very important and necessary process to all companies.

    (c) How prepared are you to be an effective Social Media Marketer?
    I have been promoting my mother's cafe in Korea more than 2 years now. I am not professonial at it, but I am able to upload pictures and notifications and promote them through facebook and instagram. Since I don't have enough knowledge of marketing and social media, I would like to learn them and apply those education to my marketing websites.

  20. I think Social Media is an ever evolving way to connect with areas of interest, influencers, policy makers and friends. While the applications may vary, it is an easy way to share information quickly, which can also be a downfall in this fast news cycle.

    Social networks are valuable in the marketing mix because people tend to trust information that comes from a connected source, rather than a company posting an advertisement. The more connection and trust you have with the user, the better the experience will be on both sides.

    I think social media will be one tool in my toolbox, but probably not the most used. This may be due to my current lack of skill and exposure, and it will be interesting to see how my views and use evolve over this course

  21. I think that social media are the ways of the information media developed on the Internet and are the media including a social element such as the information sharing that utilized the information dispatch by the individual, the communication between individuals and the ties of the person

    Social Networks are important in the marketing mix because social media helps companies to promote products on advertisements greatly, instead of reducing labor costs and stores for rent when it comes to internet sales. In addition, social media is a way to identify new targets.

    I think that learning and understanding social media marketing and after practicing many and many a time is the way to be an effective Social Media Marketer

  22. Social media is a means of mass dissemination of information. In our case, the social media that concern us will be social networks such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. These networks are a way to maintain the social link between individuals. These are essential tools for businesses today that can communicate about the brand and stay active in the consumer's mind. Nevertheless, it is important to use them carefully because the published information can be consulted quickly and easily by a large number of people.

    Social networks are therefore essential for companies and they must be taken into account in a strategic approach. When launching a product, a company will have to identify the most appropriate social networks for its needs to communicate as efficiently as possible. Compared to the marketing mix, it will therefore take into account the social networks in the study of the promotion but also the place if the product is on sale on the internet.

    I am only a beginner in the use of social networks from a marketing point of view but I find it very interesting to see how to use a social network rather than another to ensure good communication. I had to manage a facebook page for an association and I had courses on this subject in France but I still need to deepen my knowledge because it is harder than I was thinking.

    To me, social media is a very accessible tool which purpose is to connect people without any barriers.

    b) Why are Social Networks important in the marketing mix?
    First, it’s important to relieve that their place is evolving in the society we’re living in. Nowadays, social media can be considered as some « new media » because of their accessibility. Concerning their place in the marketing mix, my opinion is that today, social media are unconditionally inevitable in our society because they’re in every consumer’s mind and life.

    c)How prepared are you to be an effective Social Media Marketer?
    I’m a great social media user, I everyday use Instagram, snapchat or Facebook to communicate with my friends and I enjoy it so I think I’m prepared to learn more on these fields.

    Social Networks are becoming more and more important. we can see that when your are looking for a job. Linkedin for example is all about networking. and nowadays, a Linkedin profile can be a first interview

    It's really important to be active on the social media, I still need a lot to be a good SM Marketer, but at least I know how the main social medias work
